Because Sometimes... It IS Too Good To Be True.

I got an e-mail from a lovely reader named Vanessa (hey love!) & she was asking me about trade tang. For those of you who haven't heard of it, trade tang is a website that sells "wholesale" products out of China - and typically for "way too good to be true" prices. My boyfriend found the website on his search for cheap hockey jerseys and when he sent it to me - I couldn't help but notice the MAC Hello Kitty products they were showcasing on the front page. None of the product descriptions said MAC, but let's admit that this looks pretty legit and pretty enticing:

Any "bootleg" product that I see that doesn't make me say "wow what a shitty attempt at a knock-off" is pretty intriguing to my bargain hunting self. You have to be careful because some vendors say they're only $1.00 for the item but they require you to buy 50 of them. Some of them don't. Anyways - I ended up getting 30 of these stunningly similar HK MAC lipsticks that were promised to all be different shades & since I was working on expanding my collection, I figured $30 for 30 lipsticks was a GREAT deal. Especially if they're "MAC" inspired. Well when they got here I looked like this:

Now don't get me wrong, I do wear some of them on occasion. With lip gloss over top of them. But the colors were not what was shown. Three of them were twisted up into the lid, smooshed, & broken. And I got 4 duplicate colors. Not only were most of the colors awfully gaudy (we're talking 1991 hot orange lips, baby) - they didn't even bother to give them names. They were just numbered. The packaging is almost identical but that's where the similarities end. Let's just say I could think of 30,000 better ways to spend $30.

Boyfriend got the Office Season 5 from them for $20 & although it works and you get all the episodes - someone clearly just taped them off of the TV since advertisements for upcoming shows pop up on the screen. No extra features & packaging that the vendor created themselves. So although it's there and we saved $15 - I'm not totally sure it was worth it.

So those of you thinking of using Trade Tang... I wish you luck. I told Vanessa that it might not be bad for things like brushes where the brand name doesn't totally make or break the product, but honestly - I'd save your money. People are scared of getting ripped off by the "too good to be true" deals all the time, so save the anxiety and spend your money elsewhere. I think you'll be glad you did.
